  • Toxic

    A substance that is harmful.
  • Toxic

Pertaining to a substance that is harmful. The toxicity of a substance is the potential of that substance to cause harmful effects. These effects can strike a single cell, a group of cells, an organ system, or the entire body. A toxic effect may be visible damage, or a decrease in performance or function measurable only by a test. All chemicals can cause harm, but when only a small amount can be harmful, the chemical is considered toxic. Toxic materials may be solid, liquid, gas, vapor, dust, fume, fiber, and mist.
  • Toxicity

Negative effect of a compound, as shown by altered morphology or physiology. It is meaningful only when the effect itself is also described, such as changes in the rate of cell growth, cell death, etc.
  • Toxicity

Degree of being poisonous to a living organism or person; ability to cause grave harm or death.
  • Toxicogenomics

The study of how genomes respond to environmental stressors or toxicants. Combines genome-wide mRNA expression profiling with protein expression patterns using Bioinformatics to understand the role of gene-environment interactions in disease and dysfunction.
  • Toxicology

A science that deals with poisons, their effects, and the problems involved.
  • Toxin

Any poisonous agent, especially a poisonous substance produced by one living organism that is poisonous to other organisms. Toxins are usually very unstable, notably toxic when introduced into the tissues, and typically capable of inducing antibody formation.
  • Toxin

A substance produced by microorganisms that can inhibit cell growth in tissue culture and may cause temperature rise in animals.
  • Toxoid

An antigenic toxin, Example is tetanus toxoid that is a bacterial vaccine.
